We acknowledge and deeply regret every act of abuse, all the more heinous since it was carried out in the name of the elevation of consciousness and under the cover of virtue. To share these words now is part of assuming our responsibility, voicing the pain and the hurt that this causes us, and moving towards a situation of greater equity and respect. We also acknowledge that we have been complicit and therefore share the responsibility, to a greater or lesser extent, for having collaborated with the system of silence and control. Those of us sharing and signing this text are individuals who have been part of the 3HO/Kundalini Yoga/Sikh Dharma communities, who have listened to the stories of those who suffered, chosen to believe them and allowed ourselves to be moved by them.
After receiving hundreds of witness statements, what had been hidden in plain sight for so long was confirmed: rape, sexual battery, harassment, abuse of minors, lies and hypocrisy in the guise of morality, and a twisted, systematic control of the intimate life of the members of the community, implemented through their own selves. The Siri Singh Sahib Corporation, 3HO, KRI and Sikh Dharma International responded to this situation by commissioning a professional investigation carried out by an independent organisation, and which resulted in a report that was published recently ( ). Many other people were finally able to find the appropriate context to make known the torment they had endured, whether directly from Yogi Bhajan, or from the system of practice, living and control which he originated. At long last, the dam which held back the waters burst, and the flood came through. Finally, all of this came to an end as we reached 2020 and Pamela Dyson (formerly known as Premka Kaur) published a book with her memories of the intimacy that she shared with Yogi Bhajan. They were all hushed away, silenced and ignored by the community and its collective intention to protect our belief in our teacher’s righteousness and the purity of his teachings. As the decades went by, many persons raised their voices to denounce what they had lived through. We present this letter as a position and pronouncement regarding the various forms of abuse which several women, men, children and teenagers suffered at the hands of Yogi Bhajan, since the early days of 3HO in the 1960’s until his death in 2004.
